I was 14 when I first went to England. I was given this little book before a three-week school exchange. I loved the three weeks I spent with a wonderful host family in St. Martin’s Vicarage in Coventry.
My fascination for all things English and the English language in particular started well before that, however. I like to think that it did with my first cup of tea, taken with milk and, at the time, even sugar. My introduction to the English way of drinking tea took place in school: Our teacher’s wife being English, he brought us tea bags and taught us how to take our tea with milk. That was how it all began. And it never ended.
More than forty years have gone by since. I have visited, studied, lived and worked in, travelled to and found friends in the U.K., Europe and around the globe.
Now just guess where I met the man I most love to communicate with in English these days? Literally on my doorstep…
